What is Dandruff ?

Dandruff is those white flakes you see on your collars and shoulders and can be particularly embarrassing. Dandruff has nothing to do with the oiliness of the hair. It is entirely dependent on the skin of the scalp. Aggravating dandruff is due to fungi that lives on the scalp.

Dandruff can get severe especially when the weather around is cold and if the individual is dealing with stress.One common cause is seborrheic dermatitis, or seborrhea. Some people with dandruff may also have seborrheic dermatitis in other areas of the body, such as their ears, the center of the face, and the center of the chest.

Treatments for Dandruff

Dandruff shampoos are classified according to the medication they contain:

• Pyrithione zinc shampoos (e.g., DermaZinc, Head & Shoulders). These contain zinc pyrithione, an antibacterial and antifungal agent.

• Tar-based shampoos (e.g., Neutrogena T/Gel). Coal tar slows how quickly skin cells on your scalp die and flake off.

• Shampoos containing salicylic acid (e.g., Neutrogena T/Sal). These help eliminate scale.

• Selenium sulfide shampoos (e.g., Selsun Blue). These contain antifungal agents.
  Use as directed and rinse well to avoid discoloration.

• Ketoconazole shampoos (e.g., Nizoral A-D). These shampoos are designed to kill dandruff-causing fungi.
